Spotify Not Playing Music: How to Fix

Spotify not playing, pausing randomly, or having no audio output is commonly caused by device conflicts (another device streaming), Bluetooth routing, or Offline mode without downloads.

Quick fix (TL;DR)

  • Check volume is up (both phone and Spotify's own slider)
  • Check "Devices Available" — music may be playing on another device
  • Force close Spotify and reopen
  • Disable Offline mode if you don't have downloads
  • Log out of all devices: account.spotify.com → Sign Out Everywhere

Step-by-step guide

Step 1 — Check audio output

  1. Press volume up on your phone
  2. Check if Bluetooth is connected to a speaker/headphone you're not wearing
  3. In Spotify Now Playing: tap the device icon (bottom-left)
  4. Verify it says "This Phone" (not another device)
  5. If another device is listed: tap "This Phone" to switch playback here

Step 2 — Check account conflicts

  1. Spotify (free) allows 1 stream at a time
  2. If someone else is using your account: your playback pauses
  3. In Now Playing: look for "Playing on [Device Name]" message
  4. Fix: change your password (forces everyone else out)
  5. Or: account.spotify.com → "Sign Out Everywhere"

Step 3 — Disable Offline mode

  1. Spotify → Settings (gear) → "Offline mode"
  2. If ON: only downloaded music plays (everything else fails)
  3. Toggle OFF → you need internet for streaming
  4. If no internet available: you can only play downloaded playlists
  5. Check your internet connection (try a browser)

Step 4 — Clear cache and restart

  1. Spotify → Settings → Storage → "Clear cache"
  2. This doesn't remove downloads, just corrupted temp data
  3. Force close Spotify completely
  4. Restart your phone
  5. Reopen Spotify → test playback

Step 5 — Reinstall Spotify

  1. If nothing else works: delete Spotify
  2. Reinstall from App Store / Play Store
  3. Log in → your playlists and library are cloud-saved
